The challenge
In supermarkets and wholesale stores, weighing fresh produce always adds friction: the shopper brings fruit and vegetables to the scale, someone weighs them and prints the label, and only then can the shopper go to the checkout. It's slow, error-prone and depends on staff being available at the weighing station.
Systel, Argentina's leader in commercial weighing solutions, saw a clear opportunity in that flow. If the scale could recognize on its own which product was on the tray, the whole process would get simpler: shorter lines, fewer pricing errors and a smoother experience for shoppers.
The problem was that no one at the company had ever worked with artificial intelligence. The technical know-how was there, but of a different kind: programmers, electronics engineers, industrial designers. Building an image recognition system from that base, one that could work in real supermarket conditions, was an entirely new challenge for the team in 2021.
